Tough Questions

  • How much will I get paid when I become an officer?

You can expect to start on £23,500 - 28,500 depending on your level of education. Your food and accommodation will be heavily subsidised meaning more of your salary ends up in your pocket for you to decide how to spend it.

  • When are the officer intakes into Sandhurst?

Officer intakes into the Royal Military College of Sandhurst are in January, May and September.

  • How do you turn students into officers?

If you’re a student, you have a number of options. As a Year 11 student, you can apply for Welbeck, the residential sixth form college for potential officers hoping to join a technical corps. You could also apply for an Army Sixth Form Scholarship so that your parents or guardians receive financial support through your A Levels. If you plan to go to university, you could apply for an Army Bursary which will pay you a lump sum for each year of your studies.

Graduate Opportunities

Life as a Regular Army officer offers you more than any other graduate career. There are all the benefits you’d expect, like a competitive starting salary, medical care and a pension, as well as a range of others that civilian employers just can’t match.

If you serve as an officer in the Territorial Army, you’ll be able to combine military training with your existing civilian career. You’ll be paid for every session you attend, plus get travelling expenses, and you could get a tax-free bounty. And if you deploy on operations you’ll be paid at the same rate as your Regular counterparts.

As a Territorial or a Regular officer, your training will help develop your leadership skills and teach you some new ones. When you’re ready you’ll take on the challenge of leading soldiers, using your abilities to solve a range of practical problems.

It’s a rewarding career, too.

Pay increases as you take on more responsibility, and your leadership will make a real difference to the lives of your soldiers and to civilians when you serve overseas on humanitarian or peace support operations.

Regular officers might choose to continue their careers in the Army or to return to civilian life. Territorial officers might have the opportunity to take up full-time posts with the Army and serve for periods of time ranging from a few weeks to several years.

No matter which route is right for you, becoming an Army officer will give you the skills and experience you need to make the most of your opportunities.
