Tough Questions

  • Can I join the Infantry as a driver?

Not directly. While some regiments have driver trades, if you're in the infantry you must first complete basic training. After one year's service with your battalion you can apply to train as a driver.

  • Can I join the Army if I've used drugs?

The Army recognises the issue of drug misuse in civilian life, so if you've had issues with drugs in the past this will not normally prevent you from joining. But once you enlist, the Army has a zero tolerance attitude to illicit drug use. You will be liable by law to random compulsory drug testing and if these tests return positive, you will almost certainly be discharged.

  • How do you turn students into officers?

If you’re a student, you have a number of options. As a Year 11 student, you can apply for Welbeck, the residential sixth form college for potential officers hoping to join a technical corps. You could also apply for an Army Sixth Form Scholarship so that your parents or guardians receive financial support through your A Levels. If you plan to go to university, you could apply for an Army Bursary which will pay you a lump sum for each year of your studies.
